ECYA/ENS: Exercise 3- Social Studies and the Arts
Directions In this exercise, you will demonstrate your knowledge of a social studies concept and knowledge of cross-curricular integration. You will be asked to discuss how the arts can be integrated into a content area of social studies to further student learning. Criteria for Scoring To satisfy the highest level of the scoring rubric, your responses must provide clear, consistent, and convincing evidence of the following: -The critical concepts are stated fully and accurately, along with the rationales, and are directly related to the topic provided. - The concepts address both historical and current issues, in depth, related to that topic. - The learning activity is well developed and describes how the arts will be integrated into social studies to further student learning of one of the four concepts. - The learning activity is worthwhile, well developed, logical, and explains what the students would be doing, the resources and/or materials that will be incorporated, and how this activity will help students learn the concept presented. - The response describes in detail how this learning activity will provide access for students with varied learning styles. Topic Area: Map Skills Student: John is a 10 year old student with TBI. He has an IQ of 65. He has minimal use of his right side. He has poor fine motor skills with his left hand. Objective: John will identify and locate the seven continents.
Prompts 1. a) Discuss the social studies concept that would address the objective. b) Discuss the fine arts concept that would address the objective. 2. a) Describe one integrated social studies and fine arts activity that would clearly engage all students in learning these concepts addressing this objective. 3. Describe two specific modification/ adaptations you would make to this activity for John. Explain what he will be doing and how the modification/ adaptations will promote John's learning of social studies and fine arts.
