MC Literacy: Exercise 1: Reading Comprehension
Directions knowledge of analysis of reading comprehension and an appropriate application of this knowledge by proposing a teaching strategy designed to improve student comprehension. Characteristics: -One strength and one weakness in the student’s comprehension are thoroughly and accurately analyzed. -Specific examples cited from the student’s response are insightful and tightly connected. -One developmentally appropriate teaching strategy that might be used to support student comprehension is described in-depth and is solidly based on analysis. -An appropriate and detailed rationale for the strategy is provided which includes evidence of research or theory. Prompt (Actual Reading Passage) The Haunted Apartment The second floor was so dark they had to wait for a flash of lightning to see. Terry’s heart was beating fast. With every crash of thunder, the building shook. On the top floor, the rain was leaking through a crack in the roof. “This is the apartment that faces the street. Come on!” said Jake. The door squeaked as Jake turned the handle. His face looked very strange in the lightning. “Well, let’s go in!” What they saw in the apartment stopped them in their tracks. Ghostly figures moved against the wall. A second later, everyone but Terry turned and ran. They had just reached the stairs when Terry called “That’s just a mirror!” Student Responses to Teacher Created Questions 1) "Terry's heart was beating fast." From this qoute, the reader can assume Terry is feeling which emotion? Student Response: He was running thats why his heart was beating fast. 2) What was the weather like outside the apartment? Student Response: The weather was bad because there was lightning outside. 3) What word describes the figures against the wall? Student Response: ghostly 4) "...stop them in their tracks." What does this mean? Student Response: It was muddy and they leaving footprints on the ground.
